I'm not sure this will do what you want in SQL Server or anywhere. The problem is the LEFT OUTER JOIN - M.LVL will be NULL when the employee does not have a manager in the employee file. Depending on the database (maybe), the result of adding something to a NULL column is NULL - is that what you want?

I have a simpler example of this from Microsoft's MSDN site, but I'll wait until you reply to the above question.
