I'm not sure this will do what you want in SQL Server or anywhere. Theproblem is the LEFT OUTER JOIN - M.LVL will be NULL when the employee doesnot have a manager in the employee file. Depending on the database (maybe),the result of adding something to a NULL column is NULL - is that what youwant?

I have a simpler example of this from Microsoft's MSDN site, but I'll waituntil you reply to the above question.

UPDATE E
  SET lvl =M.LVL+1
