Using another field is not the right way, just apply the property to the field and will be clear for everybody the if date of retirement is null i'm still working and I'm not planning to retire on 12/31/39. The field you are talking about has to have another name and a fixed (?) rule to say yes or not (oui/no, si/no, blank or not blank, Y N or blank...) Let the OS answer if the field is null or not.
