Can't hurt to write down the system password on a piece of paper . . .
Unless system passwords have changed since V2, it ain't
that easy. The usual effect is that the box will ask for a
system password, and provide a set of parameters that you
will have to send to IBM technical support, who will then
have to generate a system password for you. Once it's been
entered, there's no way to retrieve it, and even if there
were, the box is going to want a different system password
the next time.
The good news is that once you go into system password
bypass, you have a few weeks (at least a month) of
continuous up-time to come up with a system password (with
daily reminders in the QSYSOPR message queue telling you
how long you have) before it starts refusing to IPL.
On the boxes we don't have in continuous use, we keep them
plugged in anyway, and have them scheduled to come up for
an hour or two each week, then shut down, just to avoid
this situation (and to keep the hard drives from locking
up from lack of use). Even so, we've had to get two system
passwords on our D02, in less than a decade, mostly
resulting from ill-timed power outages. (You try getting a
system password for a V2R3 D02! Makes pulling teeth see
easy!)
