Some sites will point them to two different servers or subdomains.  In 
reality all it is is a DNS record.  Most ISP's will set it up so that they 
both resolve to the same thing.

Here is an example of ours:

cwtruck.com.    38400   IN      A       216.55.187.17
www     38400   IN      CNAME   cwtruck.com.

The cwtruck.com resolves to our assigned IP address, the www uses a CNAME 
record to resolve to the cwtruck.com. domain name which in turn resolves to 
the IP address....this way either of them works.
