IBM's iSeries Access for Windows is a licensed product.  I wonder how they 
verify the license?  Perhaps that same logic could be used for your 
product.

I also seem to remember something called "trivial ftp".  Netstations used 
to use this to download upgrades to their OS from hosts like the iSeries. 
And I don't recall there being a user id and password required.  Perhaps 
there is a particular directory or process that this uses or is restricted 
to.
