Christopher,

Don't know if you folks are a "roll your own", more hands on shop or are leaning more to the "packaged" side, but there are some very good Open Source report tools out there if you don't mind using Java. iReports is a great designer tool that produces output every bit as good as Crystal Reports and has a relatively easy designer interface. The reports compile as Jasper report objects and are easy to put HTML front ends on (we use servlets to process them). Also, Datavision is a good, Java based tool that produces some great output as well. The great thing about both of these tools is that you can output in multiple formats (and allow a user to choose them), HTML, PDF, XLS, plain text, and more....

Depending upon how much formatting you want the user to be able to do, either iReports/Jasper or Datavision can do a great job. And, don't fear the Java orientation. The price is right (FREE) and just about anyone (including me) can get their arms around it quickly.

A radical suggestion but worth looking into (IMHO).

Hello,

We are reevaluating our reporting solution. Right now we use
a product called CorVu to pull the data back out of our database and
write reports, but it leaves something to be desired. We are going to be
evaluating crystal reports, Microsoft reporting services, and possibly
other products. What does your company use for reporting? Do you like it
or dislike it? What are some things you wish you had known before you
purchased?

Thanks,
