You know it occurs to me that some of this all comes down to the philosophy. A few years, a gentleman wrote a book called, "If it ain't broke, break it". The problem is just that we get so tied up in the "If it ain't broke, don't break it" that we stop developing. Civilizations, countries, companies and people die because they don't want to take risks. We become so tied up in protecting what we have that we stop taking risks. Unfortunately, we are seeing that happening to America and to IBM in particular. See what they have done to the IBM business and the AS/400 in particular sure tells you lot. GM and Ford are other fine examples. Sometimes we just need to break a program and take a chance.
