Jeff,

"A" is the table correlation name.  See it on the FROM clause:

FROM DMITMMST A  <-- right there.

Can be whatever you want.  Just a way to specify a particular table without 
having to type a long table name each time.  It's only required when you have 
tables with the same names.

The following would have worked also:
INSERT INTO OLITMMST (SELECT DMITMMST.*, CURRENT_DATE 
                      FROM DMITMMST 
                      WHERE ACREC ='D');
