Needing to get the details on how to do a V4R5 "migration", I go over to the "handy dandy" Infocenter to see what it might say about this type of thing. Sure enough at: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/ic2924/index.htm I find the chapter titled "Migration", I find a subchapter called "Scenarios", A 620 running V4R5 and you are migrating to a 520 running V5R3. This is almost perfect except my machine is 9406-500 but still the exact same solution. It then points me to "Prepare Migration" and "Complete Migration" which points me to the "Backup & Recovery Guide" chapter 15. Of course the link is broken but I am determined to read this chapter with steps 1-35 which tell you in depth how to migrate the V4R5 data over to the 520. A few more broke links later(much later), I finally find the current copy of "Backup & Recovery Guide" over at the "pubs" web site. The chapter that is referenced in InfoCenter is chapter 15, which in reality is titled "System Synchronization- Planning and Procedures". This chapter is about running a "side by side" conversion and keeping the two systems in "sync" but not much in the way of "how to move v4r5 stuff over to a 520 running V5R3". Here is the "detailed" instructions from InfoCenter:"If you did not get a new server with feature code 0205, follow steps 1 through 31 in the topic, Restoring previous release user data to a new system: Step-by-step instructions in Chapter 15 of the Backup and Recovery Guide to install the Licensed Internal Code and OS/400 on the target server. When you have completed these steps, continue with step 8 in this topic."
Could someone tell me "where" the steps 1-31 are really at ? Does "anybody" at the Infocenter do anything along the lines of "quality control" ??? Does anybody actually read this stuff ?
