Two SQL APIs spring to mind:

Generate Data Defintion Language, which  will store the SQL statement (for 
creating the object type you want it to generate) in a source PF; an object 
type can be a table, index, view or scheme (among others). This is not such a 
difficult API. Ted Holt wrote a utilty on this API sometime ago at 
www.itjungle.com. Perhaps the result can be used on the "reverse engeneering" 
option of Visio. 

Visual Explain API, which I only come across seaching the InfoCenter (when/if 
it functions) and had a quick look at it; i think it is not that easy to use.
