Telnet connections crashing on takeoff? -- MIDRANGE-L

Does anybody know what might cause Telnet connections to crash on takeoff? The server in question is running, and its "idle time" gets reset when the connection crashes.

As I understand it, we've already ruled out the more obvious things, like QAUTOVRT, QAUTOCFG, and QAUTORMT, and we know that the client is making some sort of contact with the server.
