One of my customers needed to get 'to the web' in a hurry. They found a package that ran on SQL Server. We started by attempting to use DataMirror to move the data to SQL Server. First problem was that SQL server could not handle the tables from DB/2 - there were WAY too many fields. After making the thing work by carving and slicing we did get it going. Performance sucked. The machine (ironically given recent posts) the sever was named 'Jake' (for Jake Blues) because it was such a big boy. Quad XEON 500's with tons of RAM and dual RAID sets of 9GB 10K RPM drives. For the time a big box. Performance continued to be an issue and getting software updates was a huge pain. After about two years the app was killed and the database moved back to iSeries. Performance is MUCH better. The web side runs on Intel Linux (for now). Jake has been retired and is used for testing Linux stuff.
Besides performance issues we had HORRIBLE luck getting replacement parts for Jake (an HP Netserver) even while under contracted maintenance. Backing up Windoze machines just always scares me half to death. Ok it's not the backup, it's the fear of what would happen if we ever had to restore....

Have any of you moved all of your apps AND data off the AS/400 on to an
SQL server and then moved back to the AS/400 (at least for data) or
really wished you could?

Looks like we are not only moving the apps to the dotnet world but also
our data.

Should I be scared silly?? Any horror stories?

Thanks - I think.
