here is how to see how your cache batteries are doing:  These are V5R3
instructions:

To access the function, perform the following steps from the
  Dedicated Service Tools (DST) environment or the System Service
  Tools (SST) environment:
  1. Select the option Start a service tool.
  2. Select the option Display/Alter/Dump.
  3. Select the option Display/Alter storage.
  4. Select the option Licensed Internal Code (LIC) data.
  5. Select the option Advanced analysis. You may have to page
  down or scroll down to see that option.
  6. Type the value '1' in the Option column for the command
  named BatteryInfo, and press Enter.
 7. To display a list of the commands you can issue, type -HELP
  on the line labeled 'Options'.
  8. To display the I/O Adapter locations and the cache battery
  pack information, type -INFO -ALL on the line labeled 'Options'.
  9. To display a list of the I/O Adapters which have cache, type
  -LIST on the line labeled 'Options'.
  10. To display the directions on how to force the SRCxxxx8008
  error, type -FORCE -IOA and the resource name of the I/O Adapter
  on the line labeled 'Options'.
  11. To display the directions on how to force the SRCxxxx8008
  error on all I/O Adapters on the system, type -FORCE -ALL on the
  line labeled 'Options'.
