6387 tape drive problems

Is anybody else having problems with the 6387 QIC tape drive?  We've
replaced it twice on a 6 month old i5 model 520 (V5R3 current ptfs) and
are about to again.  The thing is real finicky about how tapes are
inserted and goes into a failed state and lights up the system attention
light.  It's easy enough to get running again but it is disturbing that
it's failing.  Has anybody else had similar experience?
