Back to the future!  Check out The Frankentower

You can see in the upper front a three pack of AA batteries. In this 
case the don't hold the clock but they excite the power supplies in the 
base to get the tower cranked up!

Oh, I believe our F04 had the same battery set up as your 9401 portable.
