Extended Base Directory Support?

Does anyone know what exactly Extended Base Directory Support (5722-SS1
opt 3) is required for?

I'm going through the pre-install of V5R3 and it appears that this option
has increased by almost 800mb. I'm not precisely sure what it does or
whether I need it on my upgraded system.

I've searched the web and the Info Center and am having a really hard time

finding any detail about what this option actually does.

Anyone know?
