It's not just the 520 that cries wolf - it's all 5xx i5's. Usually any
type of white message in QSYSOPR will tag it in addition to the normal
stuff. So - when the ECS line dies for some reason? System attention.
There are many more, and it's really hard to quantify what severity or
message type will flag it.

Rumor has it that the pSeries boxes have always been like that - the
attention light was on more than it was off. Basically because it's a
latching error type of thing - unlike iSeries and AS/400 of old where
when you fixed the problem the light turned off.

Sort of a mixed blessing, really. We've been used to the attention
light being horrible, horrible news in the past - now it's starting to
seem like a catch-all for both hardware and some software problems.

With the problem report search function in HMC, I'd be interested if you
could do more searches for the SRCs starting with 1100 and 1000 and see
if/when that other power supply actually did die. I think you're on to
something with the theory the secondary may have died some other time.
I also would be suspicious of that UPS making it happen.

Both power supplies were fried. Got one replaced, second one is coming.

520 is back up and running. The 520 does do a lot of "crying wolf".
Meaning, the system attention light comes on and IBM can't seem to
figure
out why. But they're pretty quick as to showing you how to turn the
attention light off. I wonder if one of those earlier times it actually
did report the power supply.

On a rack mounted 520 you can slide it out and lift the top cover. The
power supply(ies) are the two boxes in the back right hand side (with
the power plugged in them). If those lights aren't on, it's a bad
thing. UPS and IBM guy will be here around the same time.

520 down.

Our 520 is currently down. 520 has no lights on it at all. The extra
boxes for it have lights, etc. Rest of the equipment in the rack is
functional. Our 520's supposed to have redundant power supplies. One
is
plugged into an IBM PDU the other is plugged into a third party PDU.
The
IBM PDU had a breaker thrown for that port. (Has a separate breaker for

each outlet.) I reset the breaker. No luck. I unplugged both cords
from

the back of the 520, counted to 10, plugged them back in - no
difference.
HMC says the connect is disconnected. Only option, not greyed out, is
reset connection - IBM said not to take that. Before it died it called
IBM and told them SRC 11001520 which is an A/C power failure - go
figure.

Weather is lousy. Slid through a red light on the way in but managed to

stop in time to avoid t-boning this car. By the look on her face I had
her undivided attention.

UPS is dead. It warned us something about a phase out of whack and we
had

to put it in bypass. Hope the weather doesn't drop power. Without the
UPS - the kick over to the generator still drops a lot of equipment.

Not the first time that the 520 and the UPS fight. In fact our CE told
me

that the last time he thought the 520 blew the UPS. It's a relatively
sizable Liebert that ran our whole computer room once for 45 minutes
before it ran out of juice.

Hmm, while waiting for the IBM guy to show up (up to another hour yet)
maybe I'll unplug the 520 again and verify the power with some other
equipment.

Haven't heard a return call from the UPS people yet. (Serviced by JT
Packard.)
