Reeve,

The answer, as usual, is "it depends".

I'm assuming you want to change to a different overlay within a single
spool file. Not, as Rob assumed, trying to change the overlay itself.

If you are working with AFP streams directly, you can have several
overlays in line or referenced in the page descriptions of each page. You
can do this by externally defining the print file and using the OVERLAY
keyword with various record definintions in the DDS.

If you're working with SCS streams, you're kind of stuck with closing the
print file, changing the OVRPRTF, and reopening the print file. This makes
a new spool file, of course. Still, this can be managed if you use a
single outq and have the writer set up correctly.

Dan

Re: Changing an overlay in mid-stream

I kinda stay out of this area, but would a page segment work?

Changing an overlay in mid-stream

Is it possible to change an overlay without closing the print file?
My remaining common sense says "No" but I'm wondering if there's a API
providing this function.

Thanks,
Reeve
