Turned out that there were EBCDIC NULLs in the key being passed to
_Rreadk, which printf was helpfully translating into spaces, so it wasn't
until I added code to hex-dump the key that the source of the problem
became visible. Thanks to those who suggested looking at both it and the
file in hex.
