I'm not sure this is the issue. To me it seems more an issue with the web-site
developers rather than Java itself.

<rant>
On the web, I see more and more where sites _MUST_ use the latest and greatest
of any trivial new feature that anyone anywhere dreams up. Gotta download the
latest Flash/Macromedia. Gotta download the latest QuickTime. Gotta downloade
the latest AcrobatReader. Gotta download the latest [insert any plugin here] in
order to get the best possible experience [i.e., it might work].

And every single one has that license agreement stuff about "...may include
3rd-party functions and by accepting this license, you automatically accept
their licenses too" crap. There's essentially zero possibility of knowing what
all is embedded into the functions that are embedded into the plugin you just
installed. Spyware? Yes, in some cases. Incompatibilities with other software?
Sometimes, yes. Necessary? Absolutely not.

I've been simply refusing every upgrade for a number of weeks and haven't felt
I've missed out on a thing.

When sites such as InfoCenter begin to fail, then I'll seek out a new JVM, and
that's as far as I go anymore. And I _don't_ download a new JVM _until_ sites
fail.
