A Web based forum application might use a variable length field of say 32K to store messages posted from users. Storing a "trimmed" message in the database means that your application never needs to trim it again before writing it to a browser. Over the life of the application, that can save a lot of CPU cycles ;-) I use variable length fields a LOT in RPG based Web apps. HTH, Nathan.
