Hello Kirk, V5R3 doesn't seem to run too bad on our 2291 test box, but I can't give hard comparisons since this particular box is not used much. The Java web stuff dogs :-) I can tell you it runs well on the i5 though :-) Personally I think you might want to consider leaving them stable at V5R1 if they are going to upgrade in a few years. Unless you have a valid reason to move, I don't think sitting at V5R1 is going to hurt in this case. You're not going to be able to reliably run Websphere or any other Java server on a box of that size, so why not just stabilize and worry about upgrading when the time comes. Just my two cents.
