The Allow Copy of data setting was initially *YES. I tried with both
*OPTIMIZE and *NO, with long run times for all three settings.

Can you try changing the "Allow copy of data (ALWCPYDTA)" parm on the STRSQL
command?  I generally like to use *Optimize, though you may want to try *NO
first and see if the command will run that way....
