Hi Neil, I now wish I had put this EZ stuff in the bin on day one... What a waste of time just to install the bl**dy thing. About 10 years ago, I was involved in setting up our first RISC machine to replace the old white box. The whole process went so smoothly, it was unreal... When I did the planning for this new box and went through the 100 odd pages to decide what to use as a console, I thought the twinax option would be the best. Unfortunately, it looked like we got rid of our dumb terminals at some point. That's actually a call: if anyone in the London (UK) area has a spare unused and dusty dumb terminal they want to get rid off, I would happily swap it for let's say a couple of bottles of champagne to enjoy at Christmas. Anyway, even if I had had a dumb terminal at hand, I would probably have fallen in the same trap (install ez-setup and select the twinax option in the interview), which would surely have triggered the same issue. I went on my would-be console again this morning, to check this silly message again: "MAXFRAME value not valid". The only available option is to click "OK". Trying to use the wizard online help gives me the following nice message: "Congratulations! You have successfully configured your new LAN TCP/IP Interface". I like nice messages, but I much prefer them when they actually make sense. Anyway, I can live with the fact the MAXFRAME value is invalid (which I assume is being used in the CRTLINETH command), but since the wizard does not even ask for a value, the situation is just plain stupid. Oh well... Such is life (sometimes)... I will try to get on the phone to IBM today and check if they have any explanation for it. A perfect example of why many of us old timers don't care much for steenking PC consoles, and have never tried the so called "EZ Setup" because it's EZ enough to set up a 400 (ok, iSeries) without throwing the aggro and instability of dealing with Windoze and PC software on a toy "personal" computer into the task of setting up a real computer. :-) Then again I suppose that's because we've done it before and know it all and don't need to read any documentation or use any crappy PC software to tell us how to set up our Business Computer. Seriously though, it sure sounds like this EZ Setup stuff could have used a little more testing by the User Centered Design Team in Rochester instead of being reviewed by the V5R3 "Not Ready For Prime Time" crew. Just my .02 worth. :-) ...Neil "Fabrice Calmelat" <f.calmelat@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx 2004/12/12 15:53 To "'Midrange Systems Technical Discussion'" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc Subject EZ-Setup - Model 800 V5R3 - Does EZ mean Easy ?? Dear all, Here are a few thoughts after spending the whole day trying to get our new development box (Model 800 in V5R3) up and running: - Installing "iSeries Setup and Operations" (iSeries Access + EZ-Setup) worked well, - However after rebooting the PC, the following message appeared: "ez2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close - We are sorry for the inconvenience". - I was pretty sorry myself at that stage, as it wasn't a very good start to say the least. - Because the PC I was using had a fair amount of stuff installed and was on SP2, I decided to try again with a "clean" PC running Win XP Pro SP2. I got the same message. - I thought I would try again on a box without SP2. I got the same message. - So I tried it on a Win XP Home machine (even though it does not seem to be supported), and as I guessed, I received the same message. - Doing a search on Google didn't bring much, so I started a full re-install of a PC with only Win XP Pro. After installing iSeries Setup and Operations, I got the very same message again. - I thought I would try to launch ez-setup anyway in order to go to the interview stage and check what would happen. - I went through the interview and started with step one which is installing Information Center. As it would take some time for a full install on the local drive and because of my bad luck in the morning I decided it was time for some lunch. I pressed the magic button on the iSeries, waited a bit for it to start and off I went. - On my return, the control panel on the iSeries indicated that the console could not be found, which was, I suppose, a fair enough message. - I carried on with my would-be console and finalized the installation of Information Center. - After a few reboots and accepting every single software agreement, I was finally in control of the box and changed the expired QSECOFR password. - I completed step 2 in ez-setup (changing QDATE and QTIME) and I was pleased. - Step 3 was ok, but unfortunately, ez-setup stopped responding for whatever reason. - After restarting ez-setup, it was just impossible to connect to the iSeries. - I assumed that from an iSeries point of view, the line was still in use. Digging up the documentation I found the procedure to re-initialize the line and I felt much better when I got my SRC D1008066. - From my would-be console, I was back on and attempted to run step 4 in order to configure the Security Settings. The nice and fancy wizard walked me through and it worked a treat. - I didn't run the Additional Security Setup as I was on a bare Win XP box without any firewall or anti-virus and thought I would leave it for when the box would be up and running. - I then proceeded to the creation of the TCP/IP interface. Again, I answered every question and was congratulated by the wizard for successfully configuring my "new TCP/IP LAN Interface". I could have been over the moon, but unfortunately, by clicking the "Finish" button, I got a nasty message saying "MAXFRAME value not valid". - I assumed from the questions asked by the wizard that one of the end results would be to create the Ethernet Line on the iSeries, MAXFRAME being one of the parameters of the CRTLINETH command. However, the wizard does not ask for it at all... Would it not use a default of 1496??? Anyway, this is where I left it, as it was indeed enough for one day with this everything but EASY "ez-setup". Did any of you experience such troubles when installing a brand new machine in the simplest configuration ever (1 iSeries in V5R3, 1 UPS Powerware 9125, 1 clean Win XP Pro console cabled via 97H7557 serail cable) ? I hope I am not the only one, because otherwise I will have to visit a psychiatrist to check if I was such a bad person in a previous life to deserve such hassle in that one, especially on a Sunday. Alternatively and if it doesn't already exist, I don't mind running an online club for IT people wasting their time on a Sunday trying to solve problems that shouldn't exist in the first place. Anyway, I would love to hear about your experiences and any clues to progress this issue are indeed welcome. Fabrice.
