Yesterday the only thing I could find from the infocenter using service director was the Service and Support manual. And it said precious little about this.

From the V5R3 Info Center try:
Service and Support
   Customer Service and Support
   Setup a connection to IBM.

That should give you all the gory details. <BTW> There's this wonderful
little box up at the top called Search. It works! :-)

Which manual or manuals from the info center should we look at?

Mike,

The Service Director at V5R3 is incorporated into 5722 SS1. You no longer
need the Licensed Program 5798 RZG. It sounds like you are trying to start
the old Service Director subsystem in your start up program. End the old
Service Director subsystem and remove it from your start up program.

Once you have done that, do GO SERVICE and follow the instructions from
there. It will force you to do the setup. I would HIGHLY recommend that
you go to the Info Center and read how to do that. There are some changes
in there that you need to understand.

Yes, but pours was "broke" for some reason after our v5r3 upgrade - I
need to set up/enable it.

I think it's "just there". Check out the Memo to Users.
