John, you might want to just ask specific questions re the as400
database.  Database files are called physical files on the 400. 
Indexed views of the database file are called logical files.  To
create a database file you either use SQL or code the file description
in a language called DDS ( data description specs ) in a source member
and the run the CRTPF ( create physical file ) command to create the
database file from those DDS specs.   To create an index, a logical
file, code another source member with some DDS and run the CRTLF
command.
