John is correct.  Sinse 1980 (+/-) the mid range community (s/38 on) has
lived in a world of relationial data base.  Our debates have been how far
into Codds levels of normalization to go not which tools best restructure
the beast.  The os is the database, the database is the os.  We have lived
in an object oriented world sinse the 38.  Everything on the machine is an
object...

You will find that some iSeries people have a hard time understanding other
Databases and what is required to operate them because i5/OS, previously
name OS/400, simply doesn't require them. The operating system IS the
database and the database IS the operating system. The developers and
analysts understand that the underlying operating system monitors the
database and tunes the system, for the most part. Developers are tasked with
developing applications. The "tuning" and "maintenance" are done by the
system. Occasionally, maintenance must be done, but the operating system
contains all of the commands required to perform any maintenance.

Please keep in mind that I know **ZERO** about the iSeries and UDB. We are
considering a conversion from z/OS on zSeries to i5OS on iSeries. The
company doing the presentation basically said that everything that we need,
with a few exceptions, is integrated into the i5OS on the iSeries. In
particular UBD is integrated (so we don't need to buy it). But I was
wondering if any iSeries people out there have an opinion about the lack of
requirement for any extra software to support UDB on iSeries. Such as
performance monitors, reorganization utilities, anything at all? I'm
confused (as usual) about why UDB on iSeries does not require any such
software while it appears, to me, that DB2 on z/OS really requires a lot of
extra cost software. This is the whole reason that we are considering this
conversion. z/OS simply requires too much extra cost software compared to
other platforms.
