Theoretically it stands for Hardware Management Console. Users have other
definitions for the acronym. Most of which will be blocked by spam
blockers. On any i5 that will either be doing LPAR's or Capacity Upgrade
on Demand, a HMC is required. It's a true WYSIWYG device, but only in the
meaning When Your System Is Working You're Glad. Expect to boot it a few
times a day under heavy use. Can go weeks if you don't touch it. Good
thing is that you can reboot it and your iSeries stays running. Like a
new version of Op's Console. Only the PC must come from IBM and be
customized. You order it as an HMC. Comes loaded with a customized Linux
setup.

Now, I've found Op's Console to be rock steady. I've upgraded OS's with
it. I've switched it over from W2K to XP and thought it was very reliable.
Other's have not. Much like I am sure there is a customer somewhere who
finds the HMC to be reliable - just haven't met them.

Al Barsa tore into IBM at COMMON about the HMC.
