RE: Why separate pools?

This is the situation.  I want more memory in poolxyz.  Now, I have to 
figure out which pool's to shrink to stick it into base so I can then 
extend poolxyz.

A shared pool is a pool in which multiple subsystems can run jobs. The
advantage of shared pools is the flexibility of sharing memory between 
pools
if it is not being used. System value QPFRADJ adjusts memory to maximize
resources on a dynamic system. Shared pools can also use Expert Cache by
setting the paging option on the WRKSYSSTS or WRKSHRPOOL to *CALC.

I would set all but the machine pool to *CALC.

Yesterday you asked how to know which pool to move memory from when using
the CHGSHRPOOL command.  I didn't think of it at the time, but I'm pretty
sure that the excess memory always moves to/from *BASE.  If you try to 
move
too much you'll get msgCPD1103.  After you move it, QPFRADJ will just 
'fix'
it anyway....

I don't know how much spool work you have and I know that the change is
minimal, but my guess is that *SPOOL is overcommited on this system.  I
would try setting *SPOOL to 100M/*CALC and see if QPFRADJ moves it back 
up.
