Thanks for your comments and pointers to the research groups.

Also, I would be very interested in anyone else's experience of moving from
S/390 to iSeries. For example, what were the major benefits in the change of
platform?

Other than the opinions of those of us that have programmed,
administered, been a systems programmer on, used and even consulted on
both over the years, I'd try one of the following and see if they have
done a comparison(not in any particular order):

Forrester Research
Gartner Group
META Group

There are perhaps others but I think you'll find the above have a good
finger on the pulse of everything in IT from strategic to tactical.  
But, each tends to spend more time at one end of the spectrum than the
other.   As you can imagine, they will probably charge you for their
research and try to get you as a customer if you are not now one.  I'd
just see about getting what you want unless you'd like to be a customer.
  They do some top work so if you have to keep ahead of the trends and
strategic thinking, then perhaps being a customer is the cheaper way in
the long run.  They each have different levels of service that you pay a
different price for.   They'll have all the figures you'd ever want.
