Slow Ping using Host Table

Hi,

Does anybody know what could cause the following slow down - 

Application calls from an 830 V5R2 to WINTEL servers using the Host Table.
The applications use a number of Data Areas to look-up the Server
Alias. Changing the Data Area's from Name to IP address is not an
option as our Data Management team do not allow any hard coding of
IP's

I have tested a number of application calls and they are all running
slowly, a simple test I made was pinging the servers using the name
reference from the table -  each took 16 sec and Ping using the IP
address (instantaneous).  There have been no changes to the OS a
number on months, and no PTF's have been applied.
