Steve, you bring up a point I hadn't considered. It would seem the ideal introduction to iSeries newbies would be to not even introduce them to development using PDM, SEU, SDA, etc. Train them right off on WDSCi and never even let them touch the green-screen dev tools. Boy, that sounds like an idea for a book / conference opportunity.
