Not so hard as it seems. IIRC, there's a possible gotcha - you might need 
to put user id and password on the same line, with a space between. Or they 
need to be on separate lines. One is the right way - I forget

The windows FTP client expects the user and password on separate lines.
The OS/400 FTP client expects them on the same line.
