Hardware compression is a feature of the tape IOA/IOP (unsure which).
There is no hardware compression available for save files.

That's why we prefer the hardware compression feature on all tape
drives...

It would be nice if we could backup accross removeable (and AFFORDABLE)
disks like we can with Windows, linux, aix, etc....
