No need to be sorry; I'm sorry if I seemed a bit snappish about it, as it
was my own fault for being a bit vague with my terminology. What I'm after
is probably best described as something similar to a multi-format logical,
or an SQL UNION.

And while I would never need to write to this file, I would need it to
track all changes in the individual physicals, so certainly something that
creates a logical would be preferable to one that creates a new physical.
