Actually the opposite is true.  Technical conferences like COMMON and
COMDEX are terrible draws for the casinos.  Tech people are, as a rule,
not gamblers.  When COMDEX rolled around in November (it's now defunct)
the normal room rates that were $59 per night jumped to $250 per night
to try to make up for the lost casino revenue.

As I understand it, COMMON had a great time in Vegas (Al, may correct me
here ), but the problem is that COMMON attendees are those that actually
ATTEND the sessions and don't waste their time in the damn
casino's...and Vegas is more interested in people spending thier time in
the casino's than having a good conference... :)
