On IBM mainframes (OS/360 MVT, SVS, MVS...) we typically called it a "star", e.g.: //SYSIN DD * was pronounced as "sysin dee-dee star" when reading JCL out loud... And don't forget the slash-star (in columns 1 and 2 of the card) for "end of file"... /* It was a little easier to say than "slash-asterisk"...
