That's a valid plan. The last benefit of waiting to purchase the new disk
drives until needed are:
1) If you need to expand later you can take advantage of any higher
capacity drives IBM may come out with without having to buy an expansion
unit, etc.
2) The newer drives might be able to take advantage of newer controller
cards.

RE: More disk arms myth exploded...

Thanks, Rob, for the feedback. It really makes me hopeful that the new
systems will far outpace our current boxes.

What I neglected to mention last week (my fault!) was that we're also
looking at some additional workloads in the same LPAR so I'll stick with
my current recommendation. Luckily, late Friday our global CIO gave me
the go-ahead to start the i5 upgrade project based on my current
configs. We'll be buying a pair of Enterprise Edition 570s so a few
extra disks won't really change the price enough to notice. Also, since
it's just an OTC for the disks (no maintenance cost), it's not that
large of an expense over the projected life of the systems.

I gave you hard numbers. I dropped from 42 drives down to 7 and kicked
butt. So dropping from 65 to 26 should be no problem. Granted, some of
my drives were a bit older than your drives. So instead of going to 1/6
the drives, like I did, go to about 1/3 like IBM recommends. That way,
if the users do go hog wild, you won't fill up your tower, you can use
whatever drives replace the 70gb drives.
