Are you reading the response from the HELO/EHLO command before you send off the MAIL FROM command? It looks like the first response may be left over from the previous command.

Also, remember that SMTP servers send you a connection greeting, so as soon as you connect you should do a read (before issuing a command). If you don't account for that, it might be why your responses seem to be off by one.
