There's a wide variety of technologies being deployed (PHP, JSP, ASP, CGI, etc), but in the end they all drive HTML to the browser to make the end users life easier. The tricky part isn't choosing a technology (despite all the fun we may have arguing about it) since they're all very capable technologies. The trick is designing a web application that is simple and intuative for the end user.
