Based on the recommendations from this list (thanks to everyone), I added a 
significant number of records (10,000 to be exact) to the file.  Here's what I 
found:

File 1 - variable length fields, no allocate length - total file size = 1208320 
bytes
Files 2 - variable length fields, each field has an allocate length of 10 bytes 
- total file size = 1404928 bytes
Files 3 - fixed length fields - total file size = 3727360 bytes

I didn't think about the file overhead.  I thought I would see significant 
differences in files sizes regardless of the number of records in the file.  
Now I know better.
