Jeff,

1) Why restrict the system. Save while active?

2) On other systems (non-iSeries) what is more common is:

Mirror your disk all the time
Break the mirror[1]
Continue to run on one side while you backup the other side to tape.
Reestablish the mirror.

It's zero downtime that way. Oh, and this can be done with the disk and
tape on the same SAN fabric so the host OS isn't even involved (other
than to flush it's buffers at the start of the backup so everything is
on disk.)

[1] - These are typically dual-mirror configs. That is, the mirrors have
mirrors, so when you break the mirror you're still protected from DASD
failures.
