Done that one. We had just added some disk and we're about to configure
it. Or we would configure it if the screen would come up. I'm sweating
bullets too, as on the previous service call, a hard drive went out on us
during the IPL. It took 45 minutes just to get an inexplicable error
message. This time, the screen is just black. 45 minutes pass. Okay, at
least it isn't the same thing again. We take yet another look at the box.
Everything still looks normal, no lights, no messages, except for the
black console.

Finally my CE says, Which session is this screen on? Alt-Jump.

Another time, I was doing a full system backup, and I was waiting and I
was waiting and trying to dial in and get a sign-on. It just wasn't coming
up. I was in a panic over my brand new 720 we had just put into
production. So I drove in and charged into the computer room, when I saw
what I had done, I literally fell on my ass laughing.

I had left it in manual IPL mode.

Oh well, I think I IPL'ed one AS/400 about three times, via the front
panel, waiting for the signon screen until my coworker and I realized that

we were on the second session of the dumb terminal (Alt-Jump). You can
bet that tidbit is now typed up in my downtime instructions. I like the
tales of stupid user as much as the next guy, and can take it too.

At any rate, glad you got it up and running. Seems to me, though, that the
port assignment on the terminal should have been the very first thing you
checked. ;-)

Yeah, you'd think so. :)
