BIG difference on getting AIX and Linux running native as opposed to running Windows native. The difference is, IBM can do the code changes necessary to AIX and Linux on their own. To get Windows to run native, they have to either convince Microsoft to do it or pay for some sort of licensing rights and be able to look at the code. That is why they integrate Intel servers now to do it. The task of running it on an AS/400 is in their hands, because Windows is already made for Intel processors. They just have to get the intel hardware to talk to the AS/400. Also, it won't replace desktops. To do that, IBM would have to push Windows Terminal server. IBM's goal is not the desktop market. It is server consolidation. You have 5 linux servers, an AS/400 and 3 Windows servers in your computer room? Get a single i5 with some integrated xSeries boxes and now you have all those servers running on one piece of equipment. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Barber" <mboceanside@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 07, 2004 1:59 PM Subject: Re: i5....continues... > This remains the "golden bullet" for the I/E/400 machines. > > They can do it(already have in labs) but I suspect they have > held back on this for some "other" reasons.... > > If they can put Linux and Aix in a little partition, do > you really think Windows(any version) is a real challenge ??? > > This rumor of running Windows "native" has been around > as long I can remember and frankly I don't know why IBM > has resisted this for so long... > > But ....just think how many desk tops would be replaced > by one server in most shops... > > Can you imagine how much revenue IBM gets from selling > PC's and the required support in the larger instalations ??? > > Soooo, is Windows on a single server a good idea ???? > > Pete Helgren wrote: > > > "and soon to be announced a 64 bit MS Windows > > server version running "native" on a 9406 partition)" > > > > Is this just rumor or is there any documented substance to this?
