Have to agree, Mark. Strikes me as yet another example of my inverse effort rule - ease of use for the end user is inversely proportional to the amount of effort (not taking the easy way out) by the developer. In this case, whether by design or not, the lack of effort to provide something like an ordinal in the tool/language/utility known as SQL results in tremendous effort on our, the "end users", part.

Does anyone else think that the complex code required to do something this simple and basic in SQL is absurd? I love SQL for some things, but the hoops required to jump through for some other items makes it a clumsy solution many times on the /400. JMHO.
