There are several ways to do so. The one that we use here is java programs using JDBC and a type 4 driver for SQL server. The obvious limitation for this method is that you must use java any time you wish to access SQL server. I believe that MS SNA server (the name has changed - I don't know the new name) offers the ability to use DRDA to SQL server; but I have never tried to do so.
