Pat

Let's just talk "local" for the moment.
(remote is another story)

Twinax has it's own processor at the "other end"..
Ethernet does not....the user manages everything.

Not so. There is hardware processing the Ethernet signals, typically another dealing with TCP/IP and maybe even IPDS. There's likely way more processor in an Ethernet Print box or terminal than in any Twinax tube or Printer. Can you say 5251, or 5256?

OK, a 100mb switch but what is a 1gb "uplink" between
switches.

It's essentially a 1Gb port that is used to connect switches. Since a switch may have 24 or even 48 100Mb ports if they were all busy you'd need 2.4Gb or even 4.8Gb back to the main closet to keep them all busy. However since that's likely not to happen. but it is fairly likely that the total activity of those ports exceeds 100Mb (Just two ports could do that) the switch has a higher speed port (often two) that are used to connect back to the main network switch. Newer switches even offer 10Gb uplinks. It's just like NASCAR or F1, "How fast can you afford to go?"

You are very brave to not have a twinax console....

Hate 'em. Can't remote into them, can't have a control panel on them, gotta be on site to use it. Boooo! "Ops Console remote: Better than being there!"
