The iSeries can access the spreadsheet on the PC easy enough via the QNTC file system (given sufficient configuration). Having the iSeries extract cells from the spreadsheet -- personally I would use Java and the open-source Apache POI project to do that, but if you don't have Java expertise there, that would take a while to get working. Some program on the PC goes out and polls the PLC's. Then takes this data and stores it into certain cells. Perhaps PLC 001 quantity run goes into A4, PLC 021 quantity run goes into B4 and so on. Anyway, the boss wants the iSeries to poll the PC, and not have the PC initiate the transaction. Perhaps this way the iSeries can control when datafiles get updated. Backups, period end, scheduled downtimes, that sort of rot.
