Dave,
Why don't you utilize the retention (expiration) that
can be set in the Media Move Policy.  I have our
dailies set to retain the media for 23 days before the
tape expires and can be reused.  

My Daily is set as follows...
Retention type: 2 (days)
Retain media: 23  (23 days)
Save file retention type: 4 (none)

This way when a tape is used within BRMS, it cannot be
reused until it expires in 23 days.
