That's definitely a true statement to some degree. I have heard about many 
technologies that I haven't seen implemented - such as non-magnetic 
storage. I remember hearing that storage could possibly be implemented in 
some type of crystal. There is a company producing a projector that is a 
couple of steps away from being a true holographic projector.

IBM is constantly getting the most patents out there. HP has had their 
"Invent" slogan for a couple of years and now they are doing the 
nanotechnology advertisements. 

Most of the future breakthroughs will be extensions of what has been done 
previously.

I'm still waiting for a fully-functional Light Saber!
